This is a very important new partnership for IBM as we embark on a “decade of smart” where we believe smarter technologies can be applied to make the world’s systems more instrumented, interconnected and intelligent.

For example, energy and utility companies are finding more efficient ways to generate and distribute power and water. Cities are deploying traffic solutions to help society save time and money. Consumer products companies are using intelligence to make and deliver better quality products, faster and for less money. And it’s only the beginning. IBM UK is working on two key areas within our Smarter Planet initiative: Energy and Cities.

We are working with public and private sector and other influencers to better understand the challenges our country faces and how we can provide smarter solutions for our energy and water systems for years to come. With 80 years of leadership experience in helping businesses transform, IBM offers a wide range of consulting services, deep industry solutions and new technologies that enable utility companies to take advantage of new business innovation. We want to continue our journey in gaining a deep understanding of the challenges our clients face.

That is why we had no hesitation in partnering with SBGI, it is essential we forge these partnerships to get us close to the core, working with members in partnership to find answers. With advances in technology—sophisticated sensor networks, smart meters, deep computing and analytics—we can be smarter about how we manage our planet’s energy and water
systems.

ELEXON delivers a range of services that are critical to the successful operation of Great Britain’s electricity trading arrangements. We handle over £500 million of our customers’ funds each year and interact with every one of the over 200 companies that take part in the electricity industry, who in turn deal with over 28 million customers across the country.

As part of our role in ensuring that electricity settlement takes place, we have expertise in procuring and managing large industry leading contracts for systems and processes, we provide assurance services that the system works, that our customers are complying, and we managed the implementation and development of one of Great Britain’s largest energy industry codes, as well as dealing with the ongoing day to day governance.

We’ve managed extensive industry change over the past 10 years, with the development and introduction of the NETA arrangements, the role out of the code into the Scottish Market in 2005 (BETTA), undertaken regular reviews and reprocurements of our large contracts (worth over £226 million), and constant updating of the code itself. We are now perfectly placed to help provide industry leading solutions to the challenges that changes across the energy industry are creating.

How is ELEXON looking to the future?

We’re consulting widely on smart metering, and smart grids, looking at how any proposed changes may impact on settlement and our customers, and proactively proposing solutions. We’re considering the impact of the low carbon economy, and particularly the challenges that electrification of transport, as well as an increased reliance on renewable energy sources, will bring. And we’re looking at ways we can reduce costs to our customers, by commercialising some of our offerings to customers outside the scope of the BSC.
